La Massa 2020
“La Massa” embodies the strong identity of the rugged territory of Panzano, elegantly dressed in our winemaking personality. The freshness and minerality of Sangiovese, skilfully blended with the opulence and nobility of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, allow this wine to convey our idea of joy and happiness.
THE 2020 VINTAGE
50% Sangiovese
30% Cabernet Sauvignon
20% Merlot, Petit Verdot and Alicante Bouschet
The 2020 vintage began with a mild winter, which led to earlier budbreak compared to the annual average. Spring, on the other hand, brought cool temperatures and numerous rainy days, slowing down vine growth while still allowing regular development and proper flowering. At the end of June, summer arrived with warm, sunny days. In July, a few thunderstorms brought relief and hydration to the vines, allowing the growth and veraison of the bunches to be completed in the best possible conditions.
We waited until mid-September to reach optimal grape ripeness and thus begin the Merlot harvest. At the end of September, a weather front slowed down the harvest, which then resumed in October with Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.
The 2020 vintage produced approximately 100,000 750 ml bottles.
WINEMAKING
All the grapes were carefully selected on two sorting tables before being transferred to stainless steel tanks, where fermentation took place for approximately 25 days, during which pump-overs and punch-downs were carried out. Daily sampling and tastings allowed us to draw off the wine at the moment of maximum polyphenolic extraction.
Ageing in French oak barriques, 20% of which were new, began with an initial period of approximately 6 months during which the wine remained in contact with the fine lees.
Bottling took place in a single batch starting from March 2023.
TASTING NOTES
La Massa 2020 is characterized by a brilliant ruby-red colour. On the nose, fresh notes of black fruits and graphite emerge, followed by balsamic and spicy nuances. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with sustained acidity and ripe yet lively tannins. A pronounced savoury note, characteristic of our soils, gives this splendid vintage of La Massa a long persistence.
