La Massa 2014

“La Massa” embodies the strong identity of the rugged territory of Panzano, elegantly dressed in our winemaking personality. The freshness and minerality of Sangiovese, skilfully blended with the opulence and nobility of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, allow this wine to convey our idea of joy and happiness.

60% Sangiovese

30% Merlot

10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante B.

The 2014 vintage was one of the most distinctive at La Massa. After a winter that was around 2–3°C warmer than the seasonal average, spring was mild and dry. These conditions brought forward budbreak in the vines, while still allowing good vegetative development during the early growth stages and promoting an accelerated development of the inflorescences. In the second half of June, weather conditions changed dramatically, with a marked drop in temperatures. These conditions slowed down vine growth, bringing the phenological stages back within the norm. However, the abundant rainfall made it necessary to carry out careful leaf removal and proper bunch thinning in order to improve aeration and reduce humidity, helping to prevent possible infections. All of this, together with a careful choice of treatments, allowed us to maintain the grapes in excellent health until harvest. The harvest began in the second half of September and ended in the first half of October, during a harvest window characterized by the absence of rainfall and good temperatures, which allowed the grapes to reach excellent levels of ripeness.
The 2014 harvest will go down in history as one of the latest.

The 2014 vintage produced around 115,000 bottles.

The year 2014 was vinified entirely in the new cellar. Subsequently, the wines were aged in French oak barrels, 20% of which were new, where they managed to embody and intensify the characteristic notes of the vintage and of our terroir.

Bottling took place in a single occasion commencing May 2016.
