La Massa 2019
“La Massa” embodies the strong identity of the rugged territory of Panzano, elegantly dressed in our winemaking personality. The freshness and minerality of Sangiovese, skilfully blended with the opulence and nobility of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, allow this wine to convey our idea of joy and happiness.
THE 2019 VINTAGE
50% Sangiovese
30% Merlot
20% Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Alicante Bouschet
The 2019 vintage was characterized by generally regular weather conditions. After a winter with sporadic and limited rainfall, accompanied by temperatures ranging from zero to around 10°C, spring arrived with a clear shift towards rainy days, enriching the soil with the essential water reserves needed to withstand the summer temperatures. The rise in temperatures led to budbreak in line with the usual timing for the area. The warm summer, with some rainfall, accompanied the growth of the vines and the subsequent ripening of the bunches in a regular way, allowing for gradual and optimal phenological development. The harvest began in the second half of September and ended in mid-October. The cool temperatures allowed us to extend the ripening period, thus preserving great finesse and aromatic freshness. The bold decision to wait for the perfect ripeness of the grapes, the excellent balance between temperatures and rainfall, and the careful management of macerations and oak ageing made it possible to obtain wines of great balance, with excellent polyphenolic concentration.
The 2019 vintage produced approximately 120,000 750 ml bottles.
WINEMAKING
Ageing in French oak barriques, 20% of which were new, began with an initial period of approximately 10 months during which the wine remained in contact with the fine lees, kept active through frequent bâtonnage.
Bottling took place in a single batch starting from April 2022.
TASTING NOTES
La Massa 2019 is characterized by a crystal-clear colour. On the nose, fresh notes of red fruits emerge, followed by a lively balsamic character and remarkable purity. On the palate, it shows good acidity, with fine, well-polished tannins, a savoury note characteristic of our soils, and good persistence.
