La Massa 2023

“La Massa” embodies the strong identity of the rugged territory of Panzano, elegantly dressed in our winemaking personality. The freshness and minerality of Sangiovese, skilfully blended with the opulence and nobility of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, allow this wine to convey our idea of joy and happiness.

50% Sangiovese

30% Cabernet Sauvignon

20% Merlot, Petit Verdot and Alicante Bouschet

The 2023 vintage was marked by a complex and irregular climatic pattern. Following a mild winter, a sudden drop in temperatures and several spring frosts—without significant impact thanks to late pruning—slowed down the vegetative cycle. A cool and exceptionally rainy spring, followed by a warm and humid summer, required careful vineyard management. The high pressure of downy mildew, widespread across Central Italy, was effectively contained through precise and rigorous vineyard interventions. Lower-than-average yields contributed to a balanced ripening, enhancing concentration and fruit expression.

The harvest began at a classic time, but elevated temperatures between late September and early October accelerated the pace of picking, leading to its completion in the first week of October.

Bottling began in September 2025, with a total production of 100,000 bottles (750 ml).

Grapes were hand-harvested in small crates, followed by a double sorting table in the cellar. Fermentation took place in stainless steel, with macerations lasting approximately 25–30 days; pump-overs and punch-downs were carefully calibrated to favor a refined and balanced extraction. Daily tastings and sampling guided the racking at the point of optimal phenolic expression.

Aging was carried out in French oak barriques and tonneaux, with around 10% new oak. An initial period on fine lees contributed to enhanced complexity and volume, followed by rackings and initial blends, and further élevage.

La Massa 2023 shows a bright ruby color. On the nose, black cherry and blackberry emerge, followed by graphite, Mediterranean herbs, and sweet spices; the profile is completed by balsamic and underbrush notes. On the palate, it is juicy and vibrant, with a medium to full body: lively acidity supports a layered mid-palate, while fine, well-integrated tannins shape the structure without heaviness. A pronounced salinity, reflective of our soils, extends into a clean and persistent finish. A vintage of character, precise and deeply rooted in its terroir.
