La Massa 2011
“La Massa” represents the strong identity of the rugged Panzano elegantly dressed of our enological personality. The freshness and minerality of Sangiovese, expertly blended with the opulence and nobility of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, allow for this wine to convey our idea of joy and happiness.
THE 2011 VINTAGE
La Massa I.G.T. 2011 is an assemblage of:
60% Sangiovese
30% Cabernet Sauvignon
10% Merlot e Alicante B.
The year 2011 was characterized by a warm summer, mostly during the end of August. The abundant winter rainfall still allowed for the accumulation of a good land water resource permitting for a smooth operation of the first phenological phases. The combination of above average summer temperatures and scarce rainfall led to a more contained vegetative development and an anticipation of the stages of setting and veraison. The high temperatures in late August further accelerated the ripening of the grapes, without jeopardizing the achievement of an excellent technological and polyphenolic maturity.
The 2011 vintage produced around 150,000 bottles.
VINIFICATION
The harvest began with Merlot in late August, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese in late September and early October. The favourable climatic conditions, as well as a careful choice of the harvest date for each plot and a maniacal selection of the grapes on the sorting tables, allowed for spontaneous, precise and respectful fermentations.
Subsequently, the wines were aged in French oak barrels, 20% of which were new, where they managed to embody and intensify the characteristic notes of the vintage and of our terroir.
Bottling took place in a single occasion starting in March 2013.
NOTES
“La Massa 2011 interprets the particularly warm and sunny vintage in a masterly way. The dark and intense colour heralds a nicely concentrated wine; to the nose rich and complex, it emanates the aroma of ripe red fruits, accompanied by notes of sweet tobacco and vanilla. The taste reveals a well-balanced wine, a combination of firmness and pleasing crispness.”
